Cookie notice
Last updated: 2026-07-02
This notice explains the cookies and similar storage (including your browser's localStorage) that we use, under the EU ePrivacy rules (in Ireland, S.I. 336/2011) and the GDPR. For the wider picture see our Privacy Policy. Nothing non-essential is stored until you consent.
Your choices
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept optional analytics cookies. You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer, or by clearing cookies in your browser. Declining does not affect your use of the site.
Whether or not you accept, we measure anonymous, aggregate traffic (such as which pages are viewed) without setting any cookies and without storing anything on your device. It uses only a temporary identifier held in memory for the current page, which is never written to your device and is not reused across pages or visits, so it cannot be used to recognise you. Because it stores nothing on your device, this needs no consent under the ePrivacy rules. See our Privacy Policy for the legal basis.
What we use
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
squarewave.* | Better Auth (us) | Keeps you signed in and protects against cross-site request forgery | Session | Essential |
sw-theme (localStorage) | Us | Remembers your light or dark theme choice | Persistent | Essential |
sw-consent (localStorage) | Us | Remembers your analytics consent choice, so we do not ask again | Persistent | Essential |
cf_clearance, __cf_* | Cloudflare | Bot protection and security challenge (Turnstile) | Up to 30 minutes | Essential |
ph_* and localStorage | PostHog (EU) | Richer product analytics (interaction capture), set only after you accept | Up to 12 months | Analytics (consent) |
| Provider cookies | Discord, Google, GitHub, Apple | Set by the provider during social sign-in, if you use it, under their own policies | Per provider | Essential to that flow |
We use PostHog (EU region) in two ways. Before, and unless, you accept, it runs in a cookieless mode that stores nothing in your browser: it sets none of the cookies or localStorage listed above and keeps only a temporary in-memory identifier that is discarded when you move between pages or leave. Only after you accept does it store the ph_* cookies and localStorage and keep a persistent identifier. Withdrawing consent stops that, clears its identifiers, and returns it to the cookieless mode.
Managing cookies
Use the Cookie settings footer link to grant or withdraw analytics consent, or clear and block cookies in your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies will stop you signing in.
